About Confirmation
Grace Lutheran has a dynamic Confirmation ministry that strives to help young Christians to grow in faith so that they will live out the Affirmation of Baptism promises they make at the end of their ninth grade year.
These promises are that they will:
- Continue to be active in worshiping God and growing in his Word
- Share the Good News of Jesus (which they learn in Confirmation) by the things they do and the things they say
- Show God they love him and serve him by loving and serving others in his name.
Our program works with students in seventh, eighth and ninth grades. The involvement of parents is also crucial. Parents who keep the promises they make to their children when they are baptized play the most crucial role in helping young people grow in faith.

7th Grade Confirmation
This is the first year of Confirmation. The Old Testament is studied and students learn the key stories of Israel’s relationship with God. The stories studied emphasize God’s faithfulness to Israel and Israel’s less-than-faithful response to God. The stories are taught so students can apply them to their own lives so that they learn to trust God completely.
The Ten Commandments are studied along with Martin Luther’s meanings from his Small Catechism. We have the students memorize the commandments and Luther’s meanings. These are important to know and remember for daily living.
The class meets on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:15 p.m. Sessions are broken down between time spent in a large group and special activities done in small groups that are led by an adult leader, or “Guide.”
Seventh graders have classes on Sunday mornings and are encouraged to join in the fun of being part of the Junior Youth Group.

8th Grade Confirmation
Our eighth grade Confirmation students spend the fall studying the New Testament. Each week they examine a different aspect of the Gospel’s stories about Jesus or another section of the New Testament. We want our young people to know the story of Jesus and what is in the New Testament and also to be able to live out the truths the Bible teaches in their daily lives.
During the winter months they examine the Apostles’ Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, the sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism and the use of confession and forgiveness in worship and in our private lives.
The class meets on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-8:45 p.m. Sessions are broken down between large group sessions and times in small groups that are led by an adult leader called a “Guide.”
Most weeks there will be brief worksheets that involve reading assigned sections from the New Testament and answering a few questions based on those readings. There is also some memorization work with the Apostles’ Creed. We encourage parents to work with their child on these assignments.

9th Grade Confirmation
The ninth grader sessions on Sunday afternoons are designed to help them grow closer as a group and to truly understand the promises they will make. In the months leading up to Affirmation of Baptism Sunday, there are many ways for you to prepare to keep your promises.
The ninth grade retreat scheduled during the winter is the highlight of the year for our confirmands. It’s a time for everyone to talk about faith.
The students will prepare and complete their individual service projects in spring. These projects are a hands-on way for them to prepare to keep their third Affirmation of Baptism promise to love and serve God by loving and serving others in God’s name. They will then share this project with the congregation shortly before the Affirmation of Baptism Sunday in May.
